ReNew by Telephone: 

You may call in your vehicle registration 24 hours a day and 7 days a week from home, work, or while you’re on vacation!

  • Insurance must be current and verifiable
  • Address on current registration must be correct

Have the following information available when you call:

  1. Title number of the vehicle to be renewed
  2. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  3. The total amount due
  4. Credit card information (Visa / MasterCard / AMEX / Discover / Bank acct. #and Rt.# for Debit
  5. Daytime phone number
  6. $2.00 mailing fee applies.

You will receive your completed renewal by mail in 3 – 5 business days.

ReNew On-line: 

Renew your registration from the comfort of your home or office. Visit the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Licensing System at drive.ky.gov to start the process.

Convenience fee issued by the state will be 2.75% of total plus $2.00 mailing fee.(Visa / MasterCard / AMX / Discover)

You will receive your completed renewal by mail in 3 – 5 business days.

ReNew by Mail:

Avoid the lines and use our Mail-In Renewal Service. A $2.00 mailing fee is added to cover postage and handling. Send registration certificate, current KY insurance card, and payment (plus a $2.00 mail-in fee Credit card information (Visa / MasterCard / AMX / Discover) or Check to Jefferson County Clerk, P.O. Box 33033, Louisville, KY 40232-3033.

You will receive your completed renewal by mail in 3 – 5 business days.

*If paying by credit card, include a piece of paper that contains the following: Your name printed as it appears on your credit card, type of credit card you are using, and the account number and expiration date as listed on the face of the credit card.

In processing any transaction that requires proof of insurance and the Commonwealth of Kentucky Automated Vehicle Information System (AVIS) does not verify the insurance automatically, the 45-day rule may come into play. If you provide the Clerk’s Office an insurance card as proof of insurance, the card cannot have an Effective/Issue date older than 45 days from the date that it is presented. It is important to note that the effective date of the policy may be different than the effective date of the insurance card. For acceptance the Clerk’s Office is concerned with the date the card was issued, not the policy. This applies to Personal Policies only.  http://transportation.ky.gov

Drop Box: 

Drop Boxes are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at all Motor Vehicle Branch locations. Deposit your registration certificate, a copy of your current KY insurance card, and payment in a sealed envelope provided at the box located outside the branch location. You will receive your tags by mail.

How to ReNew Vehicles

Motor vehicle license plates are renewed in the vehicle owner’s birth month, exceptions may apply to some specialty plates. To renew, you must have a registration certificate and a current Kentucky insurance card if your insurance cannot be verified by computer. Verification depends on your company’s compliance with House Bill 29.

Accepted methods of payment are cash, money order, personal checks, and cashier’s check. MasterCard, Visa, AMX and Discover are also accepted.

Support the Child Care Assistance Program by adding a dollar when you renew.

Support the Veteran’s Trust fund with a donation when you renew.

How to ReNew Boat

All motorboat registrations and transfers are handled by the County Clerk’s Office. Kentucky law requires all boats having motors to be registered if operated on public waters. To register a boat you must have your registration certificate. Boat renewals and property tax payments may be processed in the same ways that you renew a motor vehicle (see above) except by the internet.
